Short review on Metropolis 1927

Metropolis is obviously one of the greatest production as a science fiction (sci-fi) text, as well as a dystopian literature. Technology is one of the main features or theme of the film. Metropolis is a good present of Fritz Lang interest on machines.

As demonstrated in the film, machines have played a very important part as an impact after the industrial revolution. Technology was a way or a means for the ruling class in controlling over the working class. However, by tracing back to the medieval times, the relationship between technology/ machine with humanity/human was more aggressive instead of paradoxical, which will be mentioned in the later part. In the time being, technology was compared with magic in a similar way, considering as taboo. We see Fritz Lang' attitudes toward the relationship between machines and human through the representation of technology in the film. The representation of technology in the film include (1) the "black magic" of the inventor Rotwang through the production of the robot Maria, and (2) the hallucination of Freder in seeing the biblical god: Moloch, symbolizing the scarifying of workers by the using of technology.
Notably, in the appearing of the biblical god Moloch, indicated working class for scarifying and the idea on the class difference was clearly coined. Freder had asked his father: "What will you do if they turn against you some day?" This leads to the rational choice idea on Karl Marx's attitude in opposition to religion. In order to make a reasonable rational choice, free will or the recalling of self dignity through rebellion is necessary. The rebellion was really happened by the ignition of the robot Maria's urging. On the other hand, even though the rebellion caused by robot Maria is absurd, but the rebellion will be necessary in striking for the consent between the ruling class and the working class.
Further, the flooding of the workers city as the destroying of the machine give a symbolic meaning for the paradoxical relation between machines and human: the both dependence. For sure, things go to extreme will be discouraged like the flooding and also the burning of robot Maria in the fire of straw.
